Alan Sellier’s main duties as Service Provisioning Technical Specialist are around technical setups. For example, he orders and ports DDIs (Direct-Dial-In numbers) – a foundation of core network services – and ensures all primary setups and tests are completed for our clients.
But what’s most impressive about Alan’s work is his motivation and dedication. Alan is always happy to help a colleague in need and is a problem-solving expert. His colleagues nominated him for our ‘Go the Extra Mile’ program to highlight his resourcefulness this summer when he jumped in to help with someone else’s project.
‘Alan, without being asked, stepped up and helped out with the numerous demands of the client. He was dealing with them directly and to the best of his abilities. It is truly amazing to see a fellow employee doing this and helping out both the client and the project manager!’
We took a moment to meet with Alan, to know a bit more about him and his way of working that earned him so much praise.
Q. You often go above and beyond to solve tricky situations. What’s your secret when it comes to resolve problems in the best way possible?
I have a passion for understanding how things work, and I have a curiosity to understand why things don’t work. Having unresolved issues on my plate is something I dislike, and I love a good challenge. To solve a problem, I will first work with my base knowledge, as I’ve learned a lot over the years at the Cloud Communication division of NTT. And if that’s not enough, I’ll then ask the right people in other teams. I like solving problems on my own, but I particularly like helping others solve problems. I’ve always believed that dealing with issues is the best way to learn.
Q. It seems that you’re always available to help your colleagues when needed, a living example of our core value ‘Together’! Where does this mindset come from?
I’m more than just curious, I have a thirst for knowledge. The best way to learn anything is to work with the people who already have it. I always learn ‘on the field’, working in teams, and for all the help I receive, I give back in equal amount – if not more. ‘Alone, you go faster. But together, we go further.’ It’s a motto I apply to my everyday life.
Q. What’s the biggest challenge in your role?
To be able to answer all the questions I get asked when I don’t yet have the answers.
Q. Your most memorable moment at the Cloud Communications division of NTT?
When I got my permanent contract! To explain, I started out on a fixed-term contract, without any real experience. But my fabulous team leader fought to get me a permanent place and I got it through my hard work and dedication. It was a real success for me at the time.
